Student Winners – March 2019

During every event we ask the engineers and moderators to select the students who stood out for them: the students they thought asked the best questions, or engaged most in the live chats. Well done to all of the student winners, and everyone who took part. There were so many interesting questions, and comments, but there could only be one winner in each zone. So, for fantastic engagement during the event, for posting brilliant questions and comments, the student winners below will each receive a certificate and a gift voucher. Health Zone Winner: Emily, St Colmans Clara National School Production Zone Winner: 268prdq36, St Pius X Girls’ National School Space Zone Winner: S.B123, Fingal Community College   After every activity we asks students to fill in a ratings survey to help us choose the scientists and engineers for the next activity. “I’m confident that there’s no shortage of great up-and-coming scientists and engineers” – March 2019 winners’ blog posts

After every event we ask the winning engineers to write a short post to be sent to all the students who took part in the zone. It’s the perfect way for the engineers to reflect on the previous two weeks, thank all the students for voting for them, and talk about how they plan to use their €500 prize money. If you’re an engineer keen to experience the ‘best crash course in scicomm’, apply now for the next event, at imanengineer.ie/engineer-apply   Kevin O’Brien, Becton Dickinson, Health Zone I was impressed by the level of the questions from the students, both in the live chats and in the “Ask” section. I’m confident that there’s no shortage of great up-and-coming scientists and engineers to fill the many roles that continue to be created in STEM industries and institutions across Ireland. I’d like to thank all of the students who took part, and their … Continue reading

What’s been happening in I’m an Engineer Ireland, the online engineering engagement event

Over the last week, students and engineers have been engaging online in I’m an Engineer, Get me out of here. Together they’ve talked about everything from how astronauts communicate with earth, to what goes wrong in your job, to how on earth computer mice function, and even biggest career regrets and most important of all: Bourbons or Custard Creams? This March, there’s a Space Zone and Production Zone, supported by Science Foundation Ireland, plus Energy Zone supported by Wellcome. In total, in the first seven days there’s been: 703 school students logging in to the zones 477 ASK questions from students sent to the 18 engineers 347 votes cast by students for their favourites (almost) uncountable levels of conversation in the 33 live chats that have taken place. We took part in the @IAEGMOOH live chat this am with a panel of engineers and took part in a lively exchange of questions and answers. There was a fantastic buzz around the room … Continue reading

We are running three themed zones. Read about them below, or head straight to the application form: Teachers apply: imanengineer.ie/teachers Engineers apply: imanengineer.ie/engineer-apply Space Zone Look up at night and you will see a whole lot of space out there. With less than 70 years of sending things into space under our belts, the future up above is almost limitless. In this zone, engineers might be designing spacecraft that map and explore distant planets and stars, helping us understand more about the universe. Or they could be using data from orbiting telescopes to monitor the logging of rainforests. They could even be making sure the satellite that carries your phone signal survives its shaky trip into orbit. The Space Zone is funded by Science … Continue reading

March 2017 Winners’ Blogs

After every event we ask the winning engineers to write a short blog to be sent to all the students who took part in their zone. It’s a great way for the engineers to reflect on the previous two weeks, thank all the students for voting for them and talk about their outreach plans for the prize money. Let’s take a look at what the March Winners had to say… David, Health Zone I’m really happy that I took part in the contest; it gave me the opportunity to talk to people around the country about the work that engineers do. I sincerely hope that the people we talked to now have a better idea about what work as engineer is like, and that a few of them will have been inspired enough to think about becoming engineers themselves. Engineering paves the way for the future of our planet, and it’s so … Continue reading
