The Energy Zone was a themed zone for primary schools, funded by Science Foundation Ireland. Roisín is an electrical engineer making sure everyone in Ireland has enough electricity, Robert is developing biocoal – a renewable energy source helping to move society away from fossil fuels and Karen works at an airport making sure airplane fuel gets to where it’s needed. Dave is an electronics engineering master’s student studying electricity and Cathal is a PhD student researching ways to make electricity plants better for the environment.

This was a busy zone with a higher than average number of questions asked by students. Some students found the sometimes complicated topics difficult to understand, but all the engineers were good at explaining their work in simple terms.

The Health Zone was a themed zone, funded by Wellcome. Veasna is a PhD student studying how to help bones heal faster after surgery, David, the winner of this zone, is a Postdoctoral Fellow designing and testing medical implants and Claire C is a researcher working with doctors to better understand how devices such as stents for the heart perform in the body. Claire B is a lecturer researching ways that different cells can be used to implant into babies with heart problems, and Bobby is a PhD student looking at ways to use lightweight materials in bio-engineering applications.

The zone was mostly on topic and lots of students in this zone were interested in careers, asking about the engineers’ individual experiences of becoming and working as an engineer. The zone was quiet compared to the other two zones in March’s event, with a below average number of students logged in.

Norah is a faculty member at the International Space University, Kevin works for Airbus making sure spaceships survive their trip and Jenny uses satellites to study the oceans and coastal areas. James, the winner of this zone, works in Japan making satellites and robots that explore space and Dominic is an optical engineer at the European Space Agency.

The zone was on topic, with students engaging really well with space and the engineers’ different areas of work. James was the most active in the event, making up over half of all live chat lines by engineers and, together with Dominic, accounted for over 80% of all answers in ASK.
